N-400 Travel History Checklist

Everything you need to prepare your travel history for Part 8 of the N-400 naturalization application.

Documents to Gather

  • Current passport (check all stamps carefully)
  • Previous/expired passports from the last 5 years
  • Credit card statements (all cards, last 60 months)
  • Bank statements showing international ATM withdrawals
  • Flight confirmation emails and boarding passes
  • Hotel booking confirmations
  • Airline loyalty account history (frequent flyer programs)
  • Google Maps Timeline export (if location history was enabled)
  • Travel insurance records
  • Employer travel records (if you traveled for work)

Information Needed Per Trip

  • Exact departure date (MM/DD/YYYY) — when you left the US
  • Exact return date (MM/DD/YYYY) — when you re-entered the US
  • All countries visited during the trip
  • Total number of days outside the US for that trip
  • Purpose of travel (vacation, family, work, etc.)

Step-by-Step Process

1

Gather Your Documents

Collect all passports, financial statements, and booking confirmations from the last 5 years.

2

List Every Trip

Go through each source and note every time you left the United States, no matter how short.

3

Cross-Reference Sources

Verify dates across multiple sources. If your passport stamp says March 3 but your flight was March 4, investigate.

4

Calculate Total Days

For each trip, count the days from departure to the day before return (return day = day in US).

5

Check Physical Presence

Add up all days outside the US. Subtract from the statutory period. Make sure you meet the 30-month (913-day) requirement.

6

Review and Format

Organize your trips chronologically. Format each one with departure date, return date, countries, and days. Transfer to Part 8.

Common Mistakes to Avoid

  • Forgetting short trips (day trips to Canada/Mexico count)
  • Using booking dates instead of actual travel dates
  • Counting departure day as a day in the US (it's not — it's a day outside)
  • Missing trips from old/expired passports
  • Not listing all countries on multi-stop trips
  • Rounding dates instead of using exact dates
  • Forgetting land border crossings that didn't generate stamps
  • Not updating your travel list with trips taken after filing the N-400
